What’s going on in second grade?

News/Reminders for the Week of 1/23

January25
  • Tuesday Jan. 31- library book exchange
  • Keep sending in Box Tops!
  • Make sure you are coming to school on time! You have lots to do in the morning!
  • We have a new school-wide attendance contest starting in February. Every week we have 96% or more attendance, we earn a minute towards a dance party at the end of the month!

Objectives for the Week of 1/23

January25

Word Study:

  • Read and learn the meaning of words with prefixes (sub, mis, un, dis, re, ex, in).

Reading:

  • Analyze the structure of a poem.
  • Read Haiku poetry.
  • Perform a poem of your choice!

Writing:

  • Share our personal narratives aka “small moment” story and use the writing process to begin a new one. This writing sample will be assessed.
  • Math:

    • Measure using standard and non-standard units.
    • Compare the lengths of objects.
    • Take a math assessment in the computer lab on Friday!

    Social Studies

    • Read a world map and locate continents and oceans.
    • Locate famous landmarks and understand how they represent liberty and justice.
    • Learn about the concept of a market.

    Word Study:

    • Read words with different sounds of y (y as a long e sound and y as a long i sound).

    Reading:

    • Analyze poetry to understand figurative language and make inferences.

    Writing:

  • Use the writing process to produce a personal narrative aka “small moment” story.
  • Math:

    • Learn about arrays to help set the foundation for multiplication.
    • Take a quarter 2 assessment to show what you know about numbers, measurement and solving word problems.

    Social Studies

    • Learn about transportation and communication then vs now.

    • Identify alliteration, exaggeration, figurative language and onomatopia when reading poetry.

  • Publish and share our opinion writing from last week.
  • Math:

    • Solve money word problems.
    • Learn about arrays to help set the foundation for multiplication.

    Social Studies

    • Learn how and why communities change.
    • Learn about timelines and the history of Frederick County.

    Objectives for the Week of 1/2

    Word Study:

    • Read words with ou, ow, oi, oy

    Reading:

    • Begin our poetry unit.
    • Learn about acrostic poems and concrete poems (shape).
    • Identify poems with rhyme and no rhyme.

    Writing:

  • Use the writing process to produce an opinion writing about summer or winter.   
  • Math:

    • Identify coins and count mixed amounts of coins.

    Social Studies

    • Learn about how and why communities change

    News/Reminders for the Week of 12/12

    Objectives for the Week of 12/12

    December12

    Word Study:

    • Read words with r controlled patterns (ar, or, ir, er, and ur)

    Reading:

    • Identify the author’s purpose for writing a text (inform, persuade, entertain).
    • Identify cause and effect relationships when reading non-fiction science text.

    Writing:

    • We read an article last week about how people sometimes use guide horses instead of guide dogs. We will use the writing process to write an opinion paragraph about guide dogs vs guide horses.  Students will further develop their background knowledge by researching more about the topic before writing.

    Math:

    • Use problem solving strategies (10s and 1s, open number line, number tree, etc.)
    • Solve problems where the unknown is in different places. Ex. Miss Gill had some snowballs. She threw 8 of them. Now there are 25 left. How many did she start with. OR Miss Gill had 33 snowballs. She threw some and now there are 25 left. How many did she throw.

    Science

    • Learn about stars and constellations!
